Risk Management Services would like to offer a hearty Welcome! to the two newest members of our staff, Steve Salsman and William Hernandez. Mr. Salsman, who came over from the Research Park, and Mr. Hernandez, who transferred from Facilities, will be performing maintenance and testing of the fire alarms systems on the main University campus.

Risk Management & Environmental Services has been reorganized and will now be known as Risk Management Services, with Director Gus Myers retiring and Doug Welch receiving the promotion to Director of Risk Management Services. Our Hazardous Materials Manager (Charlie Fox) and Insurance & Claims Manager (Becky Wright) are now Assistant Directors. For more information, please see the 'RMS Organization' link in the menu.

Daniel Leyva-Martinez was promoted into the new Hazardous Waste Coordinator
position in Environmental Services. He will assist the Environmental
Manager/Chemical Hygiene Officer in handling of hazardous wastes, laboratory
safety, and environmental controls inspections.

We recently received a cargo van that we have made our Environmental Services
Response Vehicle. You will see it around campus responding to chemical
spills, or indoor air quality problems, or live animal captures. It is
loaded with state-of-the-art chemical treatment materials and personal
protective equipment we need to protect ourselves during some emergencies.

We hired our Chemical Hygiene Assistant, Daniel Leyva-Martinez, who will be
updating our chemical inventories of the labs here at UNT and introducing the
monthly checking of the eyewashes to insure they are cleared of any rust or
other particles when they are needed. Of course, he will also assist in
all of the other duties and responsibilities within Environmental Services.

As of July 1, 1998, Risk Management Services has taken the
responsibility of Managing the University Asbestos Program. All questions
and concerns regarding asbestos in campus buildings may be routed to Kevin Pearson.
All Maintenance and Custodial personnel are being trained in the 2 Hour
Asbestos Awareness all Newly Hired Maintenance and Custodial personnel must be
trained with 60 days of being hired. If you know of anyone that may have
the potential in disturbing asbestos containing material, then they too should be trained
in the 2 Hour Asbestos Training. Please contact Kevin Pearson at extenstion 4429 or

Risk Management Services has initiated a Maintenance Permit
Program. Any University Department that will be performing any maintenance on any
campus building and the maintenance has the potential of disturbing asbestos MUST first
go through our office to have a work maintenance permit. Please contact Charles Fox at extension (940) 565-4429 or email him at foxc@adaf.admin.unt.edu
for more information concerning this program. Thank you in advance for participating in this program.
Risk Management has issued a MEMORANDUM about "Procedures for Operating and Renting Vehicles and
Reporting Incidents". You can access this MEMO by clicking on the
link and downloading from our Policies and Procedures page. This Memo was updated on March 1, 2005.
